What to Do With Old Window Coverings

By Pam Cole

Recycle Blinds and Shades

If you’re thinking about getting new window fashions, it might be wise to consider what you might do with the old ones you’re replacing. At Georgia Blinds & Interiors serving the greater Atlanta area, we hope to keep as much waste out of landfills as possible. That’s why we’re happy to share some ideas about what you can do to recycle or otherwise dispose of your old treatments. Read on to learn more!

Is the Treatment Still Usable?

If your blinds or shades still work, try to find someone who might enjoy them. College students or young adults just moving out on their own could find some good life out of your old treatments. Or donate them to places like Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army, or Goodwill Stores.

Is the Treatment Unusable?

If there’s no more use left in the treatment, recycling or upcycling might be the best bet. First clean the treatment as best as possible (mostly just for dust and dirt). Then take it apart. Put any metal in one area, wood in another, and fabric in another, and then discard the strings. Hardware and aluminum or metal blinds slats can go to a metal scrap yard for repurposing. If the wood or woven wood has been stained, painted, or treated or if there’s PVC, it can’t be recycled, but it might be useful for other projects. Some schools accept those sorts of materials, or you can use the pieces in place of shims. Fabric can’t be recycled; however, it—especially larger pieces—can go to the Salvation Army or Goodwill or an after-school program for projects.

Use Online Resources

If all else fails and you are finding yourself running into walls on what do to with your old blinds and shades, use online resources, such as Earth 9ll, to find a recycling center near you.
