Before You Start
Interior designers have resources and knowledge that might not be available you. That said, they’re not mind-readers. So you need to identify all of the things you’d like to accomplish in each room, including how you use the space and what you like and dislike about it currently. At your first meeting with the designer, be open and candid about your goals. If you find that the designer isn’t able to meet your vision, you might need to find a different candidate. Remember that your personal taste matters—the designer is there to assist you in your goals, not theirs.
Consider Color
When you think about color in your home, consider the ones you like—cool neutrals? Bold, distinguishable colors? When discussing this with your designer, remember to share the colors you dislike. After all, you’re the one who will be living with the results. Show your designer samples of colors you love. And remember that inspiration can come from many sources—your favorite vase, a pillow, or even an antique dish.
The Room’s Function
You obviously use your bedroom for sleeping. But perhaps you watch TV in there before going to bed. This is an important factor to share. It could make a difference in furniture placement, technology access, and available space design. The more information you share with your designer, the better your overall experience will be. Whether yours is a small project or a big one, an interior designer or decorator can really help you get the result you’re looking for and can keep you from making costly mistakes.
