Adding Color to a Room

By Pam Cole

Pirouette® Window Shadings

Color can add character, pizzazz, and style to a room. It makes a statement and speaks to emotions and feelings. However, for those very reasons, at Georgia Blinds & Interiors, we often find that our customers are nervous about adding color—they’re afraid they’ll go wrong. That’s why we’ve put together some tips and things to think about as you approach adding color to your home. Read on to learn more!

Keep in Mind

Because of how natural light changes throughout the day, color in a room can appear different at different times. For example, in the early morning, the light from the sun is warm and cozy. At noon, the light will actually feel cool. In the early evening, as the sun begins to set, the light will feel warm again, and at night, when we’ve got artificial lighting on, the light will be different, especially given the vast array of bulb choices out there. Be sure to add some color swatches (either swipes of paint on a wall or a yard of fabric on the window) so that you can live with the color for at least 48 hours before you make a decision on whether you like it.

Where to Add Color

Your eye will automatically be drawn to color, so put color where you want people to look. On a window, if the frame is white and the window treatment is also white, it will blend in, and the walls and accessories will be the focus. If you add color to a window, the general rule is to blend it in to the frame, especially the functioning window treatments that provide light control and privacy. If you feel the space is boring, contrasting window panels or valances can be added. Gold, orange, red-orange, red, and magenta have brown undertones and will blend into wood and make a space seem smaller. Black undertones such as purple, blue, indigo, green, and teal all enhance wood and visually expand space, making it look bigger. Yellow and lime green have white undertones and work well with either. Although it might seem overwhelming, once you start exploring, you’ll quickly get the knack for it. And always feel free to speak with one of our representatives if you have questions.
